Chapter 1 - The Mark Upon Her Skin

The sting on Claire’s cheek burned hotter than the chandeliers overhead, but not a single muscle on her face betrayed the fire within. The ballroom was completely motionless. Men with net worths reaching ten digits held their breath over crystal goblets, and women draped in couture diamonds stared with wide, horrified eyes. Victoria remained standing in her shimmering silver gown, her chest heaving slightly, fingers still taut from the strike she had delivered. Beside her, Julian looked as pale as death, clutching his lapels as if physical fabric could shield him from the reckoning unfolding in front of fifty board members.
Claire did not touch her face again. She let the fiery redness bloom against her porcelain skin like a badge of honor. Slowly, deliberately, she withdrew her fingers from the linen napkin resting on the mahogany centerpiece. The crisp white cloth slipped away, rustling softly in the dead silence, exposing the thick document stamped with the crest of the Vance Family Trust. Julian’s eyes dropped to the paper, his pupils dilating with naked terror. He recognized the seal; he had forged signatures against it for over eighteen months, believing Claire would never discover the phantom ledger.
""Julian,"" Claire’s voice cut through the air with surgical calm, devoid of anger, which made it far more terrifying. ""You believed silence could be purchased on installment plans. But every single dollar you funneled through Victoria’s shell firms bears your private signature.""
Victoria let out a breathless, dry laugh, attempting to recover her haughty posture. ""You have no jurisdiction here, Claire. This is an executive dinner. Security will have you dragged out onto the curb.""

Claire turned her sharp gaze upon the seated patriarch at the head of the table—Arthur Vance, whose frail hands gripped his silver cane so tightly his knuckles were bone white. ""Ask him, Victoria,"" Claire whispered, her tone chillingly polite. ""Ask your grandfather if security is coming to drag me out, or if they are already standing in the lobby waiting for the federal marshal.""
Before Victoria could snap back, the heavy double doors at the back of the ballroom clicked open, and the rhythmic sound of heavy, polished dress shoes began echoing across the marble floor.
