Chapter 15 - The New Empire

Three weeks later, the glass-walled boardroom on the eighty-fourth floor of the Vance Tower was silent.

The morning sun flooded the room, illuminating twelve empty leather executive chairs. The names of the directors who had occupied those seats for thirty years had been stripped from the brass plates outside the entrance, replaced by court summonses and asset forfeiture notifications.

Claire sat at the head of the conference table, wearing an impeccably tailored charcoal suit, her dark hair pulled back into a sleek, flawless bun. On her left cheek, the faint shadow of the slap had completely vanished, replaced by an aura of untouchable authority.

Arthur Vance sat in a motorized wheelchair beside her, his breathing aided by oxygen, but his sharp mind fully restored. Across from them sat Helen, accompanied by four senior corporate attorneys from London.

""All of Christian’s offshore shell accounts have been legally seized and absorbed into the primary trust,"" the lead counsel reported, setting a thick leather dossier in front of Claire. ""The Saint Jude blast vault remains a sealed federal evidence lockup. Christian will face trial under his real identity in October. He will never see sunlight again.""

Claire opened the dossier. The balance sheet at the bottom of the page carried nine zeros. The debts were cleared; Kane’s shares had been completely repurchased at a bankruptcy discount, giving Claire eighty-two percent controlling interest in the conglomerate.

""You took everything from them without firing a single shot of your own,"" Arthur rasped softly, his frail hand reaching over to gently tap the edge of the mahogany table. ""Your father would have been proud, Claire. But remember... power won by blood creates its own ghosts.""

""My father built a company that let vultures feed at his table,"" Claire said, signing the final restructuring decree with a silver fountain pen. She closed the folder and looked out through the floor-to-ceiling glass over the sprawling grid of New York City below. ""I won't make that mistake.""

Her private desk phone buzzed with an encrypted line. Claire answered, placing the receiver to her ear without saying a word.

From the other end of the line, across thousands of miles of static, a cold, unfamiliar voice spoke in low French:

""Congratulations on your acquisition, Mademoiselle Vance. Marcus Kane sends his regards... and his compliments on Box 408. But you forgot to check the bottom drawer.""

May you like

The line clicked dead.

Claire lowered the receiver slowly, her eyes fixing upon the distant horizon, where storm clouds were gathering over the Atlantic once again."
