Chapter 5 - False Uniforms

The cold realization struck Claire with the intensity of an electric shock. She whipped her head around toward the hotel lobby. Through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, she saw the three agents in charcoal suits leading Julian toward the private rear freight elevators—not toward the main street exit where genuine federal transport vehicles would be stationed.
They were not federal agents. They were private contractors brought in to extract Julian, eliminate the paper trail, and liquidate him before he could testify against the true architect behind the Vance Trust collapse.
""Get in!"" the voice inside the idling sedan barked again, this time with desperate urgency. The car door swung open.
Claire made her calculation in less than half a second. She grabbed the frame of the door, threw herself into the leather backseat, and slammed the door shut just as the engine roared to life, tires squealing against the wet asphalt. The acceleration threw her against the backrest. Up front sat a driver she had never seen before—a young woman with short-cropped blond hair and tactical earpieces, shifting gears with ruthless precision.
In the passenger seat sat a briefcase equipped with real-time surveillance monitors displaying the hotel’s security feeds. On one monitor, Julian was being shoved violently into the back of an unmarked gray delivery van in the hotel’s underground loading dock. He was fighting, but a needle was plunged into his neck through his tuxedo collar, and his body went instantly limp.
""Who hired those men?"" Claire demanded, her voice ice-cold despite the adrenaline surging through her veins. ""And who authorized you to extract me?""
The driver glanced at the rearview mirror, her expression entirely deadpan. ""Those men work for the consortium your father warned you about before he died, Miss Vance. The same people Julian was desperate to pay off. And as for who sent me...""
May you like
The driver tapped the center dashboard screen. A secure voice line connected with a low chirp, and a raspy, deep voice came over the speaker.
""You should have worn comfortable shoes, Claire,"" Christian’s voice resonated through the cabin. ""They know you took the master ledger.""
