Chapter 11 - The Wolf's Den

Coronado Island lay bathed in the serene, golden glow of a Southern California afternoon. At the end of an exclusive promontory stood the Navarro estate—a sprawling, white-marble fortress protected by high walls, state-of-the-art surveillance, and deep-water boat docks.
Inside the grand dining hall, Julian Navarro paced restlessly. His silk shirt was damp with sweat at the collar, his eyes bloodshot. Across the massive mahogany table sat Don Vittorio Moretti, an elderly Italian man with cold, calculating eyes, surrounded by three stone-faced bodyguards.
""You assure me the accounts are merely locked for audit, Julian,"" Moretti said, his voice quiet, dangerous. ""Yet my bankers in Milan tell me two hundred million dollars has evaporated from the escrow. We do not do business with men whose foundations are shaking.""
""A glitch, Don Vittorio,"" Julian pleaded, forcing a confident grin that didn't reach his eyes. ""A security protocol triggered by my wife's... unfortunate passing. It is being resolved as we speak. By tonight, the capital will be restored.""
""And your wife?"" Moretti asked, cutting a piece of rare steak with deliberate slowness. ""The daughter of Roberto Cruz? Her death leaves legal ambiguities. The Cruz family loyalists will not simply bow to you.""
""There are no loyalists left,"" Julian snapped, losing his temper for an instant. ""I killed—""
The massive, iron-reinforced front gates of the compound suddenly exploded inward.
The concussive blast blew the dining room's floor-to-ceiling glass windows into millions of glittering shards. Alarms screamed throughout the estate. The heavy roar of a commercial dump truck, reinforced with welded steel plates, echoed across the courtyard as it smashed through Julian's private security vehicles like toys.
Julian stumbled backward, drawing his nickel-plated automatic pistol. ""What is that?!""

From the smoking breach in the compound's perimeter, a loudspeaker echoed over the estate grounds, the voice clear, steady, and terrifyingly familiar.
""Julian. Your wife is home.""
