Chapter 1 - The Weight of an Accusation

The opulent foyer of the Vance estate fell dead silent. Even the grandfather clock ticking against the marble pillar seemed muffled by the sudden drop in temperature. Damian Vance remained knelt on one knee, his tailored charcoal suit stretching tightly across his broad shoulders, his dark eyes locked onto the miniature figure before him. The girl, no older than five, didn't waver. Her dark velvet dress rustled softly as she balmed her hands into tiny fists at her sides.

""What did you say?"" Damian’s voice was low, laced with the lethal authority that held boardrooms hostage across two continents. Behind him, Mrs. Gable, the head housekeeper, stepped forward in trembling terror, reaching out with manicured, quivering fingers.

""Sir, forgive her! She wandered out of the servant quarters while the catering staff arrived. I swear I will remove her immediately—""

Damian held up a single index finger without breaking eye contact with the girl. The movement was barely an inch, but it froze every staff member in their tracks. Security stood like stone statues near the arched entrance.

""Speak,"" Damian commanded gently, though the sharpness in his jaw showed the strain of his restraint. ""Who is your mother?""

The little girl tilted her chin up. A stubborn dimple showed in her left cheek—a mirror reflection of the one Damian saw in his mirror every morning. ""Her name is Clara. Clara Winters. And you made her cry in her room last night while she held a silver box.""

A visible tremor rippled through Damian’s throat. The blood drained from his face, leaving his sculpted features pale beneath the cold foyer chandelier. Clara. The woman who had vanished without a trace five years ago, leaving only an empty penthouse and a single broken promise.

""Clara Winters is here?"" Damian murmured, his voice cracking slightly.

The child nodded firmly, unbuttoning a tiny velvet pocket on her dress. She pulled out a tarnished silver signet ring with the crest of House Vance, holding it out for him to see. ""She said if you ever saw this, you would know you were a liar.""

Before Damian’s fingers could touch the silver crest, a frantic commotion echoed from the service corridor, followed by the sound of ceramic shattering.
