Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Marble Hall

Clara Winters stood framed in the archway of the kitchen corridor, breathless and pale as death. The tray of porcelain teacups lay in shards around her worn black shoes, brown liquid pooling onto the flawless Carrara marble. Her hair, once a cascade of golden honey that Damian used to weave his fingers through in the dark, was tied back in a hurried, messy knot. Dark circles bruised her eyes. She wore the plain grey smock of the temporary event staff hired for tonight's corporate gala.

""Daisy!"" Clara’s scream was raw, born of pure maternal panic. She didn't look at Damian; her entire world narrowed down to the little girl standing inches away from the most powerful man in the city.

Damian slowly rose to his feet. He towered above them all, towering over the ruins of tea and china, his imposing frame casting a long, dark shadow across the polished floor. Five years of private investigators, endless bank account freezes, and sleepless nights had yielded nothing. And now, she was in his house, dressed as a maid, carrying a child with his eyes.

""Clara,"" Damian breathed. His deep voice resonated with a blend of fury, heartbreak, and dangerous disbelief.

Clara rushed past the frozen guards, pulling Daisy behind her back into a protective shield. She held Daisy against her apron, her breath hitching wildly. ""Don't touch her, Damian. Don't look at her.""

""You worked here? Under my roof?"" Damian took a calculated step forward, the polished leather of his shoes crunching against a piece of white porcelain. ""You hid behind the catering crew while I tore the hemisphere apart searching for you?""

""I didn't hide from you to play a game,"" Clara spat, backing away toward the kitchen door, though two security guards silently stepped in to block her exit. ""I hid because I wanted my daughter to live. I wanted her to breathe without your family's poison choking her.""

""My family?"" Damian's eyebrows pulled together in fierce confusion. ""I made you a promise. You took fifty million dollars and fled like a thief in the night.""

Clara’s face contorted into disgust. ""Fifty million? You arrogant coward. Check your mother's personal accounts before you accuse me.""

A cold shadow suddenly appeared at the top of the grand marble staircase. The tapping of wooden walking canes rattled with terrifying familiarity.
