Chapter 15 - The Ocean Horizon

Two weeks later, the crisp autumn chill was replaced by the warm, salty breeze of the southern coast.

The Vance private estate in Cape May overlooked miles of sparkling blue Atlantic water. The sprawling white terrace led down to private dunes where the golden afternoon sunlight washed over the rolling waves.

Clara sat on the wooden porch steps, a cup of chamomile tea warming her hands. She wore a simple white linen dress, her hair loose around her shoulders, shining with the honey highlights that had returned with her peace of mind. For the first time in five years, the shadow of fear had completely vanished from her eyes.

Down on the shore, the sound of bright, ringing laughter carried over the breeze.

Daisy was running along the water's edge, her bare feet splashing through the shallow, foamy waves. She wore a yellow sundress, her face beaming with pure, unrestrained joy as she chased a tiny sandpiper across the wet sand.

Right behind her, matching her slow, joyful pace, was Damian Vance.

The billionaire had rolled up the cuffs of his trousers, completely unconcerned about the saltwater ruining his clothes. His hair was ruffled by the sea wind, his face open and relaxed. When Daisy suddenly tripped on a clump of wet seaweed, Damian caught her effortlessly, swinging her high into the salty air as she shrieked with laughter.

""Look, Mommy! Look at the ocean!"" Daisy called out, waving frantically toward the porch. ""It’s so big!""

Clara smiled, tears of quiet gratitude warming her eyes as she waved back.

Damian carried Daisy back up the wooden walkway toward the terrace. Setting the little girl down on the porch to inspect a collection of seashells she had gathered, Damian walked over and sat down beside Clara on the wooden steps.

He reached out, his warm, strong hand closing over hers. Clara didn't pull away. She leaned her shoulder against his arm, watching the sun begin its descent toward the horizon.

""Is the legal battle finished?"" Clara asked softly.

""Eleanor accepted a plea deal this morning. She will spend the rest of her years at a secured medical facility in Vermont,"" Damian said quietly. ""Julian received twenty-five years without parole. The company belongs to Daisy now. And to you.""

Clara shook her head with a soft chuckle. ""I never wanted the company, Damian. I just wanted our daughter to live.""

""I know,"" Damian murmured. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small velvet box, opening it to reveal a delicate platinum band set with a single, flawless sea-blue sapphire. ""Which is why I’m not offering you a company, Clara.""

Clara looked up, her breath catching as she met his dark, earnest eyes.

""I lost five years with you,"" Damian whispered, his fingers gently tracing the curve of her cheek. ""Let me spend the rest of our lives making up for every second. Stay with me. Not as a secret, not as an employee, but as my wife.""

Daisy trotted over, clutching a shiny white shell, looking between them with bright, inquisitive eyes. ""Are you two being friends again?""

Clara looked at Daisy, then down at the ring, and finally into the eyes of the man who had torn apart an empire to save them.

""Yes, baby,"" Clara smiled through her tears, slipping her hand entirely into Damian's. ""We're finally going to be a family."""
