Chapter 12 - The Desert at DawnThey stepped out of the hacienda into the crisp morning air. The eastern horizon behind the Organ Mountains was beginning to fracture into ribbons of gold, violet, and pale rose, washing the desert floor in clean, natural light.

The two armed guards at the driveway stood aside, watching in stony silence as David opened the car door for Sarah and Maya. There was no confrontation, no dramatic pursuit. The illusion of Hector’s omnipotence had dissolved the moment they refused to accept his currency of fear.
David started the engine. As the car rolled down the gravel drive and passed through the iron gate, Sarah looked over at her husband. The lines of tension around his eyes, which had been etched deep since Room 314, were beginning to soften.
"Are you all right?" she asked.

David placed his right hand over hers on the center console, breathing in the scent of desert sage and the faint, sweet warmth of baby lotion. "For the first time in ten years, Sarah... I'm completely free."
They drove north along the highway, leaving the valley behind them. In the back seat, Maya slept through the rumble of the pavement, safely cocooned between two parents who had faced the darkest chapter of their history to ensure her tomorrow was unburdened.
