Chapter 15 - The Unwritten HorizonA year later, on Maya’s first birthday, the backyard was filled with laughter, paper lanterns, and the sweet scent of grilled sweet corn and lemon cake. Elena arrived with a hand-carved wooden toy chest she had crafted herself, painted with soft mountain peaks and open plains.

Friends from their neighborhood and colleagues from Sarah’s clinic filled the patio, their voices mingling with the rustle of the summer leaves. "Look up there, Maya," David whispered, pointing toward the thin sliver of a crescent moon resting quietly above the Continental Divide.
Maya looked up, her wide, hazel eyes reflecting the vast, open sky.

"You can be anything you want in this world," David said softly to his daughter, his voice steady with the calm of a man who had won his soul back from the dark. "Your life belongs to you. Only to you."
Maya laid her head against David’s shoulder, her soft breathing matching his own, safe under the shelter of a love that was chosen, proven, and unconditionally free.
