Chapter 13 - Truth Across the TableTwo days later, David and Sarah sat in the living room of Elena's recovery apartment in Denver. The room was bright with morning sunlight pouring through white linen curtains, illuminating potted ferns and stacks of architectural magazines.

Elena held Maya in her arms, rocking the infant with gentle, steady care. She listened intently as David recounted the confrontation in Las Cruces—the library, the ledger, the moment Hector touched the birthmark, and the final dismissal.
When David finished, Elena looked down at the sleeping child, a soft, melancholy smile touching her lips. "I spent my whole life wondering what kind of man had fathered me," Elena said softly. "Part of me was always terrified that whatever made him cruel was waiting inside me, too."
Sarah sat beside her sister on the sofa, wrapping an arm around Elena’s shoulders. "You gave us the greatest gift of our lives, Elena. What is inside you is generosity, resilience, and love. That is what Maya inherits from you—not Hector’s shadow."
David pulled an envelope from his pocket—not a threat this time, but the legal documents finalized by their family attorney that morning. The birth certificate was complete: David Miller and Sarah Miller as parents, with Elena recognized with full legal and personal honor as the aunt and surrogate who brought her into the world.

"The past is settled," David told Elena. "Maya will grow up knowing the whole truth when she is old enough to understand it. But she will know it as history, never as an obligation."
Elena wiped away a stray tear with the back of her sleeve, resting her forehead gently against Maya’s cheek. "She doesn't look like Hector's myth," Elena whispered. "She just looks like home."
