Chapter 11 - The Return of the Patriarch

The mahogany doors rebounded against the drywall, splintering the ornate trim. Every director jumped to their feet, security personnel reaching for their holsters, but they froze mid-motion.

Flanked by four uniformed officers of the high command, Devendra Varma strode into the boardroom.

His navy suit was sharp, his brass-headed cane clicking rhythmically against the Italian marble flooring. His white hair was neatly combed back, revealing the severe, aristocratic architecture of his face, dominated by the scar that every man in the room had seen in corporate portraits hanging in the downstairs lobby.

The silence that fell over the room was absolute, so profound that Kabir’s faint sniffling sounded like thunder.

Singhania’s mouth fell open, his face draining of all color until he resembled a corpse. ""No... impossible. This is a theatrical joke. Devendra Varma died on Highway 1 in 1986!""

Dev did not look at Singhania. He walked straight past the trembling board members, his gaze fixed solely on Asha and the two children. As he reached them, the terrifying hardness in his expression melted away into profound, boundless tenderness.

He bent down, resting his knee on the soft carpet, bringing himself to eye level with Meera.

""Did the steam fly into the sky, little angel?"" Dev asked softly.

Meera’s eyes widened with pure, triumphant joy. She pointed her tiny finger at his clean-shaven face. ""Dada! You washed the dust away!""

Asha covered her mouth with both hands, gasping for breath, her eyes darting from Dev’s face to the silver signet ring gleaming on his hand. She had seen that exact ring in the oil paintings of the family gallery every day of her married life. ""Grandfather...?""

Dev stood tall, turning his gaze toward the boardroom table. The warmth vanished, replaced by an icy, sovereign authority.

""Singhania,"" Dev said, his voice echoing off the glass. ""You were a junior clerk when I signed your first promotion letter. You have grown fat on my bread, and now you bark at my heirs.""
