Chapter 8 - Steel and Shadows

The red emergency strobe began to pulse silently against the polished steel of the vault walls, painting the room in a sickening crimson hue.

Through the thick bulletproof glass partition of the security office, Manager Sharma was no longer holding the ledger. He was pressed against the wall, a gun barrel forced firmly into his temple by a man in a black leather jacket wearing a motorcycle helmet with the visor flipped up.

Standing beside the gunman was Rajan Varma.

Rajan adjusted his silk tie, tapping his knuckles against the reinforced glass. His voice crackled through the intercom speaker with smug amusement. ""I must applaud your persistence, whoever you are. My scouts spotted you leaving old Mohan's tailor shop in that ridiculous costume. You thought putting on an old suit would make you look like a tycoon?""

Dev remained entirely still, his hand resting on the head of his brass cane. He did not blink.

""You stole my father's key from the dust, you filthy scavenger,"" Rajan sneered through the speaker. ""You thought you could rob the Varma vault and sell the secrets back to the tabloids? You’re just another gutter rat trying to play God.""

Dev stepped forward until he was standing inches from the glass. The crimson light cast deep, monstrous shadows across the rugged contours of his face.

""Rajan,"" Dev spoke, his voice quiet, vibrating through the small microphone grille with the calm weight of a mountain. ""You inherited your father’s greed, but none of his intelligence.""

Rajan’s smug grin faltered for a fraction of a second. Something in the cadence of that voice, the precise pronunciation of his name, triggered an uncanny tremor of dread deep within his marrow. ""Who are you?""

""I am the man who planted the banyan tree you are currently trying to burn down,"" Dev said.

Rajan recovered quickly, letting out a sharp, dismissive laugh. ""A lunatic beggar. Typical. Kill him in the vault, make it look like an attempted robbery. Take the recorder.""

The gunman cocked his pistol and reached for the override switch to open the gate. But before his thumb could press the toggle, a deafening crash echoed from the main bank lobby above, followed by the blaring sirens of six police cruisers.
