Chapter 14 - The Final Threat

The rain began to fall in heavy, violent sheets against the glass facade of the Varma Tower, blurring the sprawling city lights below into streaks of gold and red.

By 8:00 PM, the legal papers were fully executed, signed with Dev’s ancient seal and Asha’s steady signature. The trust was unbreakable. The Varma empire was legally secure, guarded by the highest court orders in the land.

The executive suite was quiet, illuminated only by warm desk lamps. Kabir had fallen asleep on the plush velvet sofa, his tiny chest rising and falling rhythmically beneath a warm cashmere blanket. Asha was in the adjoining office finalizing emergency security protocols with the police detail.

Dev sat in a high-backed armchair by the floor-to-ceiling glass, watching the raindrops race down the pane. Meera sat on the floor beside his feet, coloring on a fresh sheet of paper with bright yellow crayons.

""What are you drawing, my child?"" Dev asked, his voice weaker now, carrying the faint rattle of deep fatigue.

""A curb,"" Meera said innocently, not looking up. ""And a plate of yellow rice. And you.""

Dev smiled, a deep, beautiful warmth spreading across his scarred, weathered face. ""The best meal I ever tasted.""

Suddenly, the lights throughout the entire floor flickered violently and died, plunging the penthouse into pitch darkness.

The backup generators did not kick in. The heavy mechanical locks on the penthouse elevator hissed, and the elevator doors slid open with a chilling chime.

Through the darkness, the red laser sight of a rifle swept across the wall, cutting through the shadows, moving directly toward the sleeping children.
