Chapter 15 - The Final Debt

The blinding searchlight of the helicopter pinned Elena against the wet asphalt.

A man stepped out of the cabin, ducking beneath the spinning rotor blades. He was older, his hair flecked with gray, wearing an expensive tailored overcoat, but the scars on his temples and the cold precision of his stride belonged to only one man: Captain John Miller.

Miller stopped ten paces away, squinting against the rain until he recognized her face. A slow, sad smile crossed his lips.

""Elena,"" he called out over the roar of the turbine. ""I hoped it wouldn't be you.""

""You let us bury an empty coffin, John,"" she said, her voice cutting through the tempest. ""You let my father die believing he had failed you.""

""Your father was a soldier from a bygone era,"" Miller said, taking a step closer, his hands resting casually inside his coat pockets. ""There was no victory in that desert, Elena. Only politicians using our lives as line items in an endless federal budget. I took control of the game. I took the money they were going to waste anyway, and I built an empire.""

""On the bodies of your own squad,"" she spat.

""I tried to save you,"" Miller urged, his voice filled with a twisted, genuine affection. ""I left the transponder frequency for Vance so you could find the ledger and join me. With that book, we control every defense contractor from London to Tokyo. We would be untouchable. You, me... the last survivors of Aquila.""

He held out his hand. On the back of his right wrist, partially hidden beneath his cuff, the same eagle-and-star tattoo was visible—faded, stretched, corrupt.

Elena looked at his outstretched hand, then slowly raised her weapon, aiming straight between his eyes.

""You aren't Aquila anymore, Miller,"" she said coldly. ""You're just another contractor on the payroll.""

Miller’s face hardened. He pulled a suppressed pistol from his overcoat with blinding speed.

Two shots rang out simultaneously over the storm.

Miller stumbled backward, his hand flying to his throat as blood sprayed into the rain. He collapsed to his knees, his eyes wide in absolute disbelief, his weapon slipping from his fingers onto the wet tarmac.

Elena stood motionless. A hot, searing pain tore through her left shoulder, but her grip on her sidearm never wavered. She walked up to the kneeling traitor, standing over him as his life drained onto the concrete.

""The unit that saved your life,"" she whispered into his ear, ""just came to collect the debt.""

Miller collapsed face-first into the puddles, motionless.

In the distance, the wailing sirens of Swiss federal police and American military escorts tore through the night, blue and red lights painting the rain-soaked industrial docks.

Elena turned her back on the helicopter, walking toward the river where Marek waited with the ledger. She reached up, slowly pulling her damp sleeve down over the eagle on her arm, finally laying the ghosts of Task Force Aquila to rest."
