Chapter 9 - The Ghost of Zurich

Forty-eight hours later, the rain was falling steadily over the gray cobblestones of Zurich's financial district. Elena Vance walked through the downpour, wrapped in a heavy charcoal trench coat, her hair dyed dark black and cut short. Marek walked fifty paces behind her, dressed in a business suit, keeping eyes on their six.

The Swiss Union Bank was an ancient, granite-faced fortress of old European capital. Inside, the marble floors and vaulted ceilings swallowed the sound of footsteps, projecting an aura of untouchable neutrality.

Elena approached the private vault registry desk, presenting the clean passport Vance had prepared for her, alongside a small, brass security key she had recovered from her father's signet ring before he died.

The elderly Swiss clerk examined the key through a jeweler's loupe, then nodded politely. ""Safe Deposit Box 404, Madame. This way, please.""

He led her deep into the subterranean vaults, down through three layers of biometric airlocks until they reached a steel-lined viewing room. He slid a long, narrow safety deposit box onto the polished oak table and bowed. ""Take all the time you require.""

The clerk exited, sealing the heavy reinforced door behind him.

Elena took a deep breath. Her hands trembled slightly as she pulled the lid back. Inside rested a single, heavy black leather-bound ledger, its pages yellowed with age, and a ruggedized satellite phone with an unlisted international dialer.

She flipped the ledger open. The pages were filled with names, off-the-books shell company accounts, and dates spanning twenty years. Senatorial campaign funds laundered through offshore accounts. Multi-billion-dollar defense logistics contracts routed to dummy corporations owned by members of the Oversight Committee. The exact financial blueprint of how the war had been prolonged for profit.

And on the final page, written in bold, handwritten ink:

Task Force Aquila was never an extraction team. We were the cleanup crew. Cole was our commander.

Elena stepped back, her breath catching in her throat.

The satellite phone inside the box began to ring.
