Chapter 6 - The Secret in the Flesh

""Hold on, Dad! Just stay with me!"" Elena pleaded, but Vance's grip went limp. His arm slipped from her wrist, dropping against the blood-soaked floorboards of the Humvee as his eyes fixed on the grey sky above.
Elena froze. The world went silent around her, despite the roar of the diesel engine and the screaming sirens behind them. She reached for his carotid artery.
Nothing.
A tear carved a clean path through the black gunpowder residue on her cheek, but her face hardened into stone within seconds. Grief was a luxury she couldn't afford on the run. She leaned over her father’s body, gently closing his eyes, before pulling the red folder from beneath his tunic and sliding it into her cargo pocket.
""Elena? What’s his status?"" Marek called out, glancing back through the partition.
""He's gone,"" she said, her voice completely deadpan, void of emotion.
Marek went silent for a beat. He slammed the Humvee through the wooden barrier of the unmanned secondary gate, the vehicle launching onto a rural backroad winding through dense pine forest. ""Where to?""
""Camden. We have sixty minutes before Cole locks down the county lines."" Elena sat back against the wheel well, rolling up her sleeve to look at the eagle tattoo on her bicep.
She had gotten it in a ramshackle parlor outside the airbase in Bagram, alongside Miller and her father, the night before their final deployment. Miller had designed the artwork himself, drawing the geometric angles of the eagle's feathers on a napkin with obsessive precision. She had always assumed it was a unit crest, a symbol of brotherhood.
“The ledger key isn't a code. It’s an algorithm embedded in the tattoo.”
She examined the feathers closely under the afternoon light filtering through the trees. What she had thought was decorative shading along the outer primary feathers was actually a series of microscopic, irregular breaks in the lines—steganography. Miller had tattooed a micro-cryptographic map directly onto their bodies, knowing that paper burns and hard drives can be wiped, but a soldier protects their skin until the grave.
""Marek,"" Elena said, climbing into the front passenger seat. ""Do you have a smartphone with a high-resolution camera?""
May you like
""Glove compartment,"" he said, keeping his eyes glued to the winding forest road. ""Who is Cole, Elena? Who is really trying to kill us?""
""The people who run the war machine,"" she replied, grabbing the phone. ""And they're about to realize they left the wrong witness alive.""
