Chapter 1 - The Weight of an Unlit Screen

The silence inside the master bedroom was heavy, laden with twelve years of shared habits, quiet compromises, and words left unspoken. Adrianne remained seated on the edge of the mattress, the powder-blue satin of her robe reflecting the cool moonlight spilling through the blinds. On the bench across from her, Julian sat with his shoulders slightly curved, hands clasped between his knees.

On the nightstand, his phone vibrated once more. It was a brief, muted buzz, yet in the stillness of 2:00 AM, it struck like an alarm.

"Why does she care whether I’ve signed?" Adrianne’s voice was remarkably composed, though beneath the soft cadence lay an edge of quiet desperation.

Julian raised his head, his eyes lined with exhaustion. "Adrianne, it’s not what you think. It was never about betrayal."

"Then what is it about, Julian?" She tilted her chin, gesturing slightly toward the nightstand. "Because when another woman texts my husband at two in the morning asking if his wife has signed legal documents, there are only a handful of conclusions a person can reasonably draw."

In the hallway, barely illuminated by the nightlight near the stairs, ten-year-old Maya stood motionless in her oversized grey sleep shirt. Neither parent acknowledged her, yet both felt her presence like a delicate glass ornament trembling on the edge of a shelf.

Julian glanced toward the hallway, softening his tone even further. "Maya," he whispered, not turning his head completely, "honey, go back to bed. Everything is fine."

The girl lingered for a heartbeat before her bare feet padded softly over the hardwood floor, retreating into the dim safety of her bedroom. Julian let out a ragged breath, running a hand through his dark, cropped hair.

"The woman texting me is Clara Vance," Julian said quietly. "She represents an estate trust in Chicago. She isn’t a lover, Adrianne. She’s an executor."

Adrianne frowned, the defensive tension in her shoulders shifting to confusion. "An estate trust? Whose estate?"

"My brother’s," Julian replied, his voice barely audible. "David's."

Adrianne stared at him. Julian had spent a decade telling everyone—his colleagues, his friends, even his daughter—that his estranged younger brother David had severed all ties and vanished into the West Coast tech industry. Mentioning David’s name was an unspoken taboo in their household.

"David passed away four months ago," Julian confessed, looking down at his knuckles. "And he left behind more than an inheritance. He left behind a choice."
