Chapter 11 - Signing the Covenant

By midday, Clara had connected with the state conservation representative and two of David’s former software colleagues in Seattle. Within four hours, one of the alumni pledged forty thousand dollars unconditionally in memory of David Vance.

The room, once heavy with the odor of defeat, became electric with purpose.

Clara printed a revised tripartite legal agreement: an interim restructuring accord that paused the foreclosure, pledged the forestry sale proceeds, and formally transferred David’s share of the sanctuary into a perpetual non-profit trust managed by a governing board.

Adrianne sat at the desk. She looked at Julian, who stood beside her. He reached down and rested his hand over hers.

"Together," Julian whispered.

Adrianne picked up the pen and signed her full name along the dotted line: Adrianne Claire Miller-Vance. Julian took the pen from her fingers and signed beneath her: Julian Thomas Vance.

As the ink dried, Clara Vance bowed her head, wiping a tear from her cheek. "David always said his brother had the steadier hand. He was right."

Julian looked out the window. Outside, Leo and two other boys were stacking firewood against the coming winter, their movements rhythmic, their immediate future secure. The knot of bitterness that had lived behind Julian’s ribs for a decade finally began to dissolve, leaving behind an ache that was no longer infected with resentment, but cleansed by mourning.
