Chapter 2 - The Ghost in the Family Ledger
Adrianne stood up, the rustle of satin breaking the bedroom's oppressive quiet. She walked toward the window, looking out into the quiet suburban cul-de-sac. Sprinklers hissed on the front lawn, an ordinary rhythm against an unravelling life.
"Four months?" she asked, her back turned to him. "You’ve known for four months that your only brother was dead, and you didn't tell me?"
"Because David died penniless, sick, and in legal shambles," Julian answered, his voice tightening. "He spent his final years running an underfunded rehabilitation sanctuary in Oregon for runaway youth. He sank every cent he had into it. When he fell ill, he accumulated staggering medical debts, alongside mortgages on the facility."
Adrianne turned around, crossing her arms. "And what does that have to do with me signing a document?"
Julian reached over, picked up his phone, and tapped the screen to reveal a digital copy of a legal contract. He handed it to her. Adrianne took the device, squinting against the harsh glare.
The document was titled Mutual Indemnification and Renunciation of Collateral Claims.
"David used our family's ancestral land in upstate New York as collateral," Julian explained quietly. "The property my grandfather left jointly to David and me. The facility in Oregon is facing immediate foreclosure, which will displace twelve teenagers with nowhere else to go. Clara Vance is David's attorney, trying to protect the sanctuary’s residents. To settle the debt without liquidating the youth shelter, the creditors require a deed transfer. But because New York is a marital property state and you and I co-signed our home refinancing against that parcel three years ago, they cannot touch the title without your explicit waiver."
Adrianne looked down at the document. "If I don't sign, what happens?"
"The bank seizes the shelter in Oregon to recoup their losses," Julian said. "Those kids get turned back onto the street."

Julian swallowed hard. "We forfeit our equity in the land. The savings we set aside for Maya’s college fund—the inheritance we promised her—vanishes to cover the remainder of David's liability."
