Chapter 1 - The First Tremor

The silence that blanketed the Grand Ballroom was heavier than the crystal chandelier suspended above the banquet table. Across the pristine white linen, Julian Sterling still stood with his arm half-extended, his chest heaving beneath his tailored tuxedo. At his feet lay the shattered shards of a crystal wine goblet, the vintage Pinot Noir mingling with drops of crimson on the floor.

Elena did not scream. She did not flinch. She slowly raised a folded linen napkin to her left temple, pressing it against the sharp gash Julian had inflicted. A solitary tear carved a quiet path down her cheek, but her dark eyes were cold, emptied of every drop of the meek obedience she had displayed for three suffocating years.

""You shouldn't have done that, Julian,"" Elena whispered, her voice slicing cleanly through the paralyzed ballroom.

Beside Julian, his mother, Victoria Sterling, clutched her layered pearl necklace, her manicured fingers digging into her throat. ""Who are you calling, you insolent little leech? Julian, take that phone from her!""

Julian lunged forward, his face contorted in an ugly sneer of aristocratic entitlement. ""Put the damn phone down, Elena! You think anyone in this city will take your side over mine? You are a nobody! I picked you out of the gutter!""

Elena calmly lifted the sleek black device to her ear. She didn't blink as Julian’s fingers grazed her lapel.

""It's time,"" she said into the receiver.

Two words. No hesitation. No tremor.

Across the room, the heavy double doors of the banquet hall did not open; they were violently unlocked from the outside. Suddenly, the brilliant chandeliers blinked once, twice, and flickered out, plunging the five-hundred-guest gala into a suffocating, breathless darkness.

Before the panic could culminate into screams, emergency floodlights snapped on with a sharp mechanical hum, bathing the room in an eerie, sterile red glow. Outside the grand panoramic windows, the roaring engines of a dozen armored black SUVs tore through the manicured hedges of the estate, their headlights cutting through the night like searching daggers.

Julian stumbled back against the table, his arrogance fracturing. ""What... what did you do?""

May you like

Elena lowered the phone and looked directly into his eyes, her lips curling into a faint, merciless smile.

From the end of the grand hall, the iron doors blew off their hinges.
