Chapter 3 - The Liquidation

The dining hall descended into madness within thirty seconds. High-ranking executives fumbled with their phones, their faces draining of color until they looked like corpses in black-tie attire.

""My portfolio... it's gone!"" a venture capitalist choked out, dropping his champagne flute.

""The offshore liquidity pool is dried up! SHG shares just plunged ninety-eight percent!"" screamed another board member, ripping off his bow tie in pure suffocation.

Julian’s own phone buzzed violently on the white linen. He snatched it, his hands shaking so hard he nearly dropped it. The screen flashed the name of his chief private banker in Zurich.

Julian answered, his voice shrill. ""Marcus! What the hell is happening? Tell them to stop the short sale! Inject the reserve collateral!""

A frantic, terrified voice shouted back through the speaker, loud enough for Victoria to hear: ""What collateral, Julian?! Your mother's sovereign trust, your real estate deeds, the maritime shipping lines—they were all transferred forty minutes ago! The debt calls have matured! Your account balance is zero! You are bankrupt, Julian! You are utterly ruined!""

The call disconnected with a dry beep.

Julian dropped the phone. It clattered against his dessert plate. He stared at Elena, who stood entirely unbothered as Leon's men formed an impenetrable perimeter around her.

""You did this?"" Victoria shrieked, stumbling forward, her face twisted in rage. ""You deceitful little viper! We took you in! You lived under our roof, ate our food, wore the clothes my son bought you!""

Elena turned her gaze slowly toward Victoria. The sheer weight of her eyes forced the older woman to stop dead in her tracks.

""Your son bought me nothing,"" Elena said, her voice chillingly calm. ""Three years ago, the Sterling Group was seventy-two hours away from insolvency. Your husband begged my late father for a lifeline. My father granted it under one condition: that I observe your family from within, to see if you possessed the honor required of an alliance.""

Elena stepped closer, the sharp click of her heels sounding like executioner's steps.

""Instead, I found an empire built on embezzlement, extortion, and arrogance. I endured your cruelty, Victoria. I endured your slaps, your insults, and Julian’s pathetic, drunken fits.""

Elena reached up, dabbing the fresh cut on her temple where Julian's glass had struck her.

""I gave you three years to prove you were human. But tonight, Julian, you drew my blood. And in my father's world, one drop of blood demands an entire kingdom in return.""

Julian fell backwards onto his chair, gasping for air. ""You're... you're Arthur Valmont’s daughter. The ghost heiress of the Valmont Syndicate.""

""Arthur Valmont was my father,"" Elena stated coldly. ""And you have five minutes to evacuate my house.""

Victoria let out a shrill scream. ""Your house?! This is Sterling Manor!""

Leon stepped forward, his eyes burning like cold furnace steel. ""Not anymore, madam. The deeds were signed over to Miss Valmont ten seconds ago. If you are not off the premises in four minutes, you will be removed as trespassers.""

Julian’s eyes burned with rabid, desperate fury. Driven by cornered instinct, he reached into his jacket and pulled out a small silver pocket blade.

With a roar of unhinged hatred, he lunged straight for Elena’s throat.
