Chapter 14 - The Heart of the Core

Sarah breached the perimeter on foot, her encrypted tablet projecting a false maintenance signal that fooled the automated turrets into categorizing her as an authorized diagnostic tech. The massive blast door slid back with a groan of ungreased hydraulic gears, allowing her into the subterranean cavern of Node Prime.
The temperature inside was near freezing, chilled by thousands of gallons of liquid nitrogen circulating through subterranean pipes. The room stretched for nearly two hundred meters, housing towering racks of quantum computing units that pulsed with a rhythmic, sickening blue glow. This was the brain of the modern world: the machine that decided who ate, who spoke, who was celebrated, and who was discarded into labor camps for lacking attention.
She walked directly to the central terminal, a circular console suspended over the primary processing well.
Her fingers flew across the glass interface, entering the master override phrases she had written twenty years ago. The system resisted her immediately, flashing crimson warning alerts across every monitor in the room.
Unauthorized command structure detected. Reversing administrative authority.
""You don't have authority over human souls,"" Sarah hissed through gritted teeth, her fingers moving with frantic precision.
Footsteps echoed behind her on the steel grating. Sarah turned to see the lead officer from the raid—the broad-shouldered man with granite eyes—standing at the entrance of the catwalk, an assault rifle leveled at her chest.
""Step away from the master console, Sarah,"" the officer commanded, his voice cold and devoid of human warmth. ""The Algorithm is self-sustaining now. It cannot be unplugged. It is the only thing keeping society from tearing itself apart.""

""It took my child from his dinner table!"" she screamed back. ""It made him beg for his life because strangers didn't click a button!""
""That is the metric,"" the officer answered smoothly, raising the rifle. ""Order requires currency. Visibility is order.""
