Chapter 6 - The Mother’s Reckoning

Miles away in the quiet suburb, Sarah Vance stood in her ruined dining room, staring at the cold broccoli remaining on Leo’s plate. The shock that had paralyzed her during the raid had dissolved, replaced by a cold, incandescent fury. She walked to the hallway closet, pulled down a battered steel footlocker from the top shelf, and punched a five-digit code into its heavy lock.
The lid snapped open, revealing items she had buried six years ago when she chose a quiet, disconnected life: an encrypted optical tablet, two high-gain relay modems, and a master administrative bypass key bearing the seal of the Central Network’s founding engineers.
Before she had become a quiet suburban mother raising a son without screens, Sarah had been known as Cipher Vance—one of the chief architectural designers of the Algorithm itself. She had left when she realized the machine was no longer measuring engagement; it was manufacturing reality.
She booted the tablet. The screen glowed to life, its boot sequence bypassing the standard firewalls with ease. Within moments, she patched into the city's backbone network.
Sarah intended to search the detention transport logs, but the moment her screen connected, she froze.
Dominating the central homepage of the entire continental network was Leo’s face.
He was sitting on a cold stainless steel table under harsh white lights, crying until his face was mottled red, pleading for a drink of milk. Below his image, a live engagement counter was spinning out of control: 4.2 million viewers... 8.9 million... 15 million.

""I’m coming, baby,"" she whispered, strapping the bypass tablet to her forearm and pulling on a dark utility jacket. ""I'm coming to tear it down.""
