Chapter 12 - The Master's Gambit

"You really are remarkably resilient, Eleanor," Marcus said, his voice carrying clearly through the crisp morning air. "Escaping the penthouse, diving off a window cradle, clearing out my security team... Julian always said you were the dangerous one."
Lily stood completely rigid under Marcus's hand, her face pale, but her eyes locked onto Eleanor with desperate bravery. Her tiny hand was shoved deep into her cardigan pocket, still clutching the sapphire secret Eleanor had entrusted to her.
"Let the child go, Marcus," Eleanor said, taking three slow, deliberate steps forward, leaving Clara supported against an iron mooring post. "It’s over. You have the company, you have the money. Leave her out of this."
"You still don't understand the law, my dear sister-in-law," Marcus chuckled, shaking his head with theatrical pity. "Julian didn't leave the shares to a child. He created an automated irrevocability clause. On Lily’s eighth birthday—which happens to be tomorrow, November 3rd—the estate automatically dissolves unless the living heir formally signs the conservatorship over to the board."
Marcus pulled a fountain pen and a single legal document from his breast pocket.
"All little Lily has to do is place her thumbprint on this transfer deed. Then she becomes an heiress with a trust fund large enough to buy an island, and I retain full voting control of Vance International."
"And what happens to Clara and me?" Eleanor asked coldly.
"An unfortunate accident at sea," Marcus said without a shred of remorse. "Tragic, really. A mother driven mad by grief, drowning her friend and herself in the harbor. A classic Vance family melodrama."
"Lily," Eleanor called out, her voice clear, calm, and resonant across the empty pier. "Do you remember the question you asked me at the restaurant?"
Marcus frowned, his grip tightening on the girl's coat. "Silence her."
"I remember!" Lily yelled back.

"Ask him, Lily," Eleanor commanded. "Ask him what is engraved inside!"
"November 3rd!" Lily shouted with all her might. "November 3rd, forgive me!"
