Chapter 14 - The Fall of the House

Sirens wailed in the near distance, growing louder with every passing second—a symphony of state police cruisers, federal interceptors, and marine patrol vessels converging on the Old Harbor from land and sea.

Marcus stood alone on the edge of the pier, his expensive overcoat flapping wildly in the wind, surrounded by his own discarded mercenaries. His empire had dissolved in less than four minutes.

"You ruined us," Marcus muttered, his eyes wide and vacant as he stared at Eleanor. "You destroyed a dynasty that took three generations to build!"

"You destroyed it the night you stole my child," Eleanor replied, kneeling down to scoop Lily into her arms, wrapping her tightly against her chest. She buried her face in Lily’s hair, smelling the sweet vanilla scent that belonged to her and her alone. "Julian built an empire. You built a slaughterhouse."

Marcus turned toward the water, looking at the black, churning bay as the first police cruiser skidded onto the pier, red and blue lights painting the fog in brilliant hues of justice. Two federal marshals stepped out with weapons drawn.

"Marcus Vance! Step away from the ledge and place your hands on your head!"

Marcus looked back at Eleanor one last time. There was no defiance left in him, only the pathetic, hollow realization that power built on blood collapses the moment truth catches light. He slowly dropped to his knees, raising his hands into the cold morning rain.

Clara limped over, leaning heavily against Eleanor's shoulder. The three of them stood together as the marshals moved in, the cuffs clicking tightly around Marcus’s wrists.

Lily looked up from Eleanor’s shoulder, her small eyes studying the face she had only ever seen in her mother’s whispered bedtime stories.

"Are you going to keep me now?" Lily asked softly.

Eleanor felt a warm tear trace a path down her bruised cheek, washing away seven years of grief and despair. "Forever, Lily. I'm keeping you forever."
