Chapter 4 - The Vault of Echoes

The tires of the yellow taxi screeched as the driver pulled into the subterranean parking garage beneath Eleanor’s penthouse complex. Eleanor threw a hundred-dollar bill onto the center console before the car had fully stopped, pulling Lily out of the backseat and moving straight toward the private elevator bank.

"Up," Eleanor told the girl, punching a biometric scanner with her thumb. The steel doors slid shut, sealing out the hum of the city.

Inside the quiet cabin, Lily sat on the floor, hugging her knees. "Who was that man, Eleanor? Why does everyone have guns?"

Eleanor leaned back against the mirrored wall, catching her own reflection. Her dark hair was disheveled, her immaculate silk blouse wrinkled, and her eyes hollow with terror she hadn't allowed herself to feel in years.

"They work for a very powerful family, Lily. My family," Eleanor said quietly. "Or at least, the people I married into."

"Are you my aunt?" Lily asked innocently.

Eleanor swallowed the lump forming in her throat. "Something like that."

The elevator chimed, opening directly into Eleanor’s sprawling, minimalist penthouse. Floor-to-ceiling windows looked out over the skyline, but Eleanor immediately drew the automated blackout shades, plunging the luxury apartment into dim amber twilight.

She walked straight to the library, pulled aside a heavy oak paneling near the fireplace, and exposed an old mechanical keyhole beneath a decorative bronze plaque. She turned to Lily. "Give me the key your mother gave you."

Lily reached out her palm, offering the brass key.

Eleanor took it, her hand shaking. The brass was cold, tarnished with age. She slid it into the lock and turned it once, twice, until a heavy mechanical click resonated within the brickwork. A hidden compartment slid outward on oiled tracks, revealing an old leather ledger, a passport with Clara’s true name—Clara Vance—and a digital micro-drive wrapped in foil.

Eleanor plugged the micro-drive into an encrypted terminal on her desk. A video file opened. Clara’s bruised, desperate face appeared on the screen, recorded inside a dimly lit room just days before.

"Eleanor," Clara spoke through the speaker, her voice cracking. "If you’re watching this, they found me. Marcus knows about Lily. He knows she isn't my daughter. She's yours."
