Chapter 15 - The Unbroken Table

Five years later, the terrace above the sea was no longer wild.
The dry-stone walls had been rebuilt by hand, rock by rock, each joint packed with clay and wild mint. The three grapevine terraces produced heavy, dark purple clusters of grapes that hung under the broad green leaves, shielded from the brutal midday sun.
Down the stone stairs came the sound of laughter and the clatter of plates.
A long trestle table of rough-hewn pine was set under the shade of a fig tree. Maya Vance, now an internationally celebrated culinary figure, was carrying a large earthenware tureen, steam rising from its lip.
Behind her walked Leo, tall and broad-shouldered, carrying a basket of warm bread wrapped in unbleached linen. Uncle Marco, now walking with the assistance of Leo’s arm, made his way slowly to the head of the table, his face relaxed into lines of quiet contentment.
Julian emerged from the outdoor stone oven, carrying a roasted leg of lamb crusted with crushed juniper and mountain sea salt. His hair was streaked with silver at the temples, his face tanned deep bronze by sun and wind, but his eyes were bright, clear, and unburdened.
They sat down together under the dappled shade of the leaves.
Julian poured wine from an unlabelled terracotta pitcher into five heavy tumblers. The wine was dark, glistening with ruby reflections in the afternoon light.
Maya lifted the lid from the tureen. The aroma of beef, charred bay leaves, and wild mountain rosemary rolled across the table, blending effortlessly with the scent of the sea breeze below.
Julian looked around the table—at the boy who had been saved from the gutter, the uncle who had found his way out of the blood-stained dark, and the young woman who had carried his mother’s spirit across an ocean when he was too blind to see it.
He lifted his glass.
"To the rejected things," Julian said softly, his voice full of warmth.
May you like
Maya smiled, lifting her glass to meet his. "And to the patience that makes them sweet."
They drank together, while below them on the glittering water, the evening boats set sail toward the horizon, guided by the rising lights of the shore.
