Chapter 14 - The Return of the Ledger

One afternoon in late June, a small wooden crate arrived by registered mail from New York. Inside was a collection of Julian's personal effects that had remained in Victoria’s penthouse: old college journals, a silver pocket watch that had belonged to his father, and a small envelope sealed with red wax.
Julian opened the envelope while standing in the kitchen. Inside was a single piece of heavy stationery, written in Victoria’s sharp, spidery handwriting:
Julian,
I hear you have turned the manor into a cooperative farm. How predictably pedestrian. You traded an empire for turnips and a peasant's gratitude. I hope when the boy grows up, he understands that his father chose mediocrity over legacy.

Elena walked into the kitchen, carrying Thomas on her hip. She saw the letter in Julian’s hand and the familiar tight expression around his eyes.
"Is it from her?" Elena asked quietly.
Julian looked at the letter, then looked at Elena and his son. He saw the healthy flush on Thomas’s cheeks, the confidence in Elena’s posture, and the sunlight streaming across the kitchen floor that had once been stained with cold soup and fear.
"It’s from a ghost," Julian said simply.
He walked over to the vintage cast-iron stove, lifted the burner plate, and dropped the paper directly into the embers. The heavy paper curled, blackened, and vanished into gray ash within seconds.

"What did it say?" Elena asked.
"Nothing that matters," Julian replied, taking Thomas into his arms and lifting him high into the air, making the baby giggle with pure, unshadowed delight. "Just an old invoice for a debt that’s already been settled."
