Chapter 3 - The Anatomy of a Transaction

Victoria sat in the morning room, her posture immaculate, sipping black coffee from porcelain so thin it was translucent. She had changed into a navy wool dress, high-necked and severe, shedding the stained white suit like a snake casting off its skin. When Julian entered, she did not look startled. She was already surrounded by her armor: three leather-bound legal folios, a fountain pen, and her cell phone resting face-up on the mahogany table.

"Before you begin whatever moral crusade you have planned," Victoria said evenly, "I suggest you review section four of our prenuptial covenant. Any public scandal involving marital infidelity invalidates your control of the maritime shipping trusts."

Julian did not glance at the papers. He walked to the marble fireplace, watching the blue tongues of gas fire lick against ceramic logs. "You think this is about money, Victoria?"

"Everything is about money, Julian. You married me to secure the northern ports. I married you to legitimize my father's holding companies. We have operated this enterprise successfully for twelve years. If you had an itch for a girl from the lower orchard, you should have followed the gentleman's code: pay for an apartment in Zurich, set up a blind trust, and keep your mouth shut."

"She didn't want an apartment in Zurich," Julian said, his voice dropping an octave. "She wanted to go home to her mother's farm. She wanted her dignity. You trapped her like an animal in a garden shed because you couldn't stand the thought of someone carrying an heir you refused to bear."

Victoria’s cup rattled against the saucer. For a fraction of a second, her composure fractured. "Refused? You dare say I refused?"

"You traded motherhood for a seat on the cultural commission, and I never begrudged you that choice," Julian replied coldly. "We agreed on our boundaries. But you stole that girl’s freedom, forged medical documents, and lied to my face while watching me mourn an unborn life. That isn't business, Victoria. That is malice."

"If you bring that child into this house under your name," Victoria hissed, rising to her feet, "the board will strip your voting shares by Friday. I will ensure every investor knows you impregnated the house staff."

"Let them know," Julian said, turning away. "I’d rather build a wooden crate with my own hands than share another boardroom with your family."
