Chapter 4 - Fragments of Truth

Elena woke when the late afternoon sun reached the edge of the mattress. The bed was far too soft; for months she had grown used to the spring mattress with the broken center that poked against her spine. She shifted carefully, feeling the heavy, rhythmic kick beneath her ribs.

A knock sounded at the heavy oak door. It was not the hurried, impatient rap of the head housekeeper, nor the sharp click of Victoria’s fingernails.

"Enter," Elena whispered.

Julian stepped inside, carrying a small tray with broth, steamed rice, and sliced apples. He looked out of place holding domestic items, his expensive cuffs unbuttoned and rolled back to the forearms. He set the tray on the side table without fanfare.

"You should eat," he said.

Elena pulled the quilt higher over her chest. "Mr. Sterling, you shouldn't be here. If Madame sees you—"

"Victoria is currently speaking with her attorneys in the library," Julian said calmly, pulling a straight-backed chair near the foot of the bed. "She no longer dictates who enters this room. Nor will she ever dictate your life again."

Elena studied him. In the past, Julian had always been a distant figure—a man who worked late in his study, smelled of cedarwood and black tobacco, and spoke in brief, measured sentences. Their single encounter had not been a product of calculated seduction, but a disastrous intersection of grief and alcohol on the anniversary of Julian's father's death, when Elena had stayed up past midnight to tend to the hearth. She had blamed herself every day since.

"I didn't want to keep it a secret from you," Elena said, her eyes welling with quiet, stubborn tears. "When the test was positive, I came to your study. But she was sitting at your desk. She had opened your mail. She told me... she told me you laughed when she told you."

Julian closed his eyes for a long moment, breathing slowly through his nose. "I was in Singapore that entire week, Elena. I never saw you. I never laughed."

"I know that now," she whispered. "I realized it when you looked at me on the floor today. You looked like you had seen a ghost."

"I did," Julian said softly. "I saw the truth I was too blind to search for."
