Chapter 12 - The Black Token

Clara kicked the duffel bag open with the toe of her boot. Among the stacks of high-denomination currency and forged passports lay an innocuous matte-black USB drive fitted with a biometric fingerprint scanner.
""Is this it?"" Clara asked, picking it up.
Vance knelt beside her, inspecting the device. ""That’s the sovereign vault key for the Zurich repository. If Julian’s thumbprint isn't scanned within three hours, the dead-man protocol will permanently wipe the transaction ledgers. Every dollar he stole from your father’s accounts will be lost to the void.""
Clara looked back toward the terrace. Julian was being hauled to his feet by the tactical officers, his face smeared with dirt, blood, and broken glass.
She walked out onto the stone patio, holding the black token between two fingers.
""Julian,"" she called softly.
Julian glared at her, his eyes wild with venom. ""Go to hell, Clara! You won't get a cent from those vaults! When that timer hits zero, Arthur Vance’s legacy is burned to the ground! You’ll be broke by sunset!""
Clara took Julian’s right arm from the officer holding him. Julian thrashed, trying to pull away, but the officer twisted the handcuffs, forcing Julian’s arm flat across the stone balustrade.
""I gave you five years of my life, Julian,"" Clara said, placing the matte-black drive flat on the stone beside his hand. ""I gave you my home, my resources, and my loyalty. And you gave me this.""
She pointed to the fresh blood soaking through her white handkerchief.
""Press your thumb on the sensor,"" Clara commanded.
""Never!"" Julian spat. ""Let it burn!""
Clara looked at Marcus Cole. ""Marcus, how long does the state consider an active resisting suspect authorized for minimum compliance restraint?""
Marcus didn't blink. ""Until the threat is neutralized, ma'am.""
Clara took Julian’s thumb, bent it back with surgical precision until the joint popped with a sickening snap, and pressed the pad firmly against the glowing blue sensor of the USB drive.
Julian shrieked in agony, dropping to his knees on the terrace.
The blue light on the drive blinked twice, turned emerald green, and emitted a high-pitched chime.
AUTHENTICATION COMPLETE. ASSETS TRANSFERRED TO PRIMARY ESTATE BENEFICIARY.
Clara picked up the drive, slipped it into the breast pocket of her charcoal vest, and wiped her hands on her handkerchief.
""Take him out of my sight,"" she told the officers.
As Julian was dragged away, cursing and screaming her name down the grand hallway, the autumn wind whipped across the balcony. Clara stood at the edge of the stone railing, watching the police cruisers speed down the winding cedar-lined driveway, their sirens echoing through the valley.
The mansion was finally silent.

But as Clara turned to walk back inside, Vance’s phone buzzed with an urgent priority tone. The old lawyer looked down at the screen, and the color drained completely from his face.
""Clara,"" Vance whispered, his voice trembling. ""Eleanor... she slipped through the perimeter.""
