Chapter 5 - Skin and Shadow

The bathroom mirror reflected a creature reborn from fire. Shorn clean to the skin, Clara’s cheekbones appeared sharper, her jawline severe, her dark hazel eyes burning with an unholy intensity. Where Eleanor thought she had left a humiliated cripple, she had inadvertently sculpted an assassin.
Clara pressed an ice compress against the red surgical track across her forehead. The swelling had begun to recede under Dr. Mitchell’s antibiotics.
By 7:00 AM, the mansion was buzzing with activity. Caterers moved through the ground-floor hallways, silver platters clinking, floral arrangements being carried toward the sunlit conservatory. Today was the summit Julian had schemed toward for three years: the formal merger between the Vance Maritime Legacy and the Sterling Syndicate, a offshore shell company controlled entirely by Eleanor’s overseas relatives.
Julian intended to sign over the last Vance family deep-water shipping terminals under the pretense of Clara’s ""incapacitation."" All he needed was for her to sit at the head of the table for ten minutes, nod like a heavily medicated invalid, and let him sign as her court-appointed conservator.
Clara opened her wardrobe. Hanging in the shadows was an outfit Julian hadn't bought. It was an impeccably tailored charcoal-grey three-piece wool suit—a bespoke gift her father had ordered for her before his terminal diagnosis.
She put it on. The sharp shoulders framed her posture; the vest cinched tightly over her ribs like armor. Around her bald, scarred head, she did not wrap Eleanor's pathetic floral silk scarf. Instead, she took a wide, pristine black velvet band, fastening it over the fresh incision line, leaving her shorn scalp exposed, unapologetic and stark.
A knock came at the door.
""Clara,"" Eleanor’s venomous voice purred through the wood. ""The makeup artist is here to cover your forehead. Open up.""
Clara didn't answer. She pulled out the burner phone and sent a one-word text to Vance: Execute.
The key turned in the lock. Eleanor stepped in, wearing a vibrant turquoise dress with pearls draping across her neck, a makeup artist trailing behind her carrying a heavy tackle box of cosmetics.
Eleanor halted mid-step. Her mouth dropped open, pearls trembling against her throat.
Clara turned around slowly from the window. The tailored suit fit like a blade. Her bald head gleamed under the morning sunlight, the black velvet band highlighting the raw authority in her face rather than hiding it.
""What... what is this?"" Eleanor shrieked, horror and fury warring in her tone. ""What did you do to your clothes? And where is the scarf?! You look like a convict!""
Clara stepped forward, closing the distance between them. For the first time in five years, Eleanor involuntarily took a step backward.
May you like
""You wanted me to present myself to Julian's partners, Eleanor,"" Clara said, her voice smooth as velvet and cold as ice. ""I wouldn't want to disappoint them.""
Before Eleanor could scream for Julian, Clara’s private phone chimed with an incoming notification. It was a live video feed from the boardroom downstairs. Julian was already shaking hands with the board members—and among them sat a man Julian definitely had not invited.
