Chapter 15 - The Dawn of Sovereign

Clara did not step back. She timed the desperate, wild swing perfectly.

As the iron wrench sliced through the air toward her scarred head, Clara pivoted on her back foot, slipping under Eleanor’s guard. Her hand shot out like an iron vise, grabbing Eleanor’s forearm and slamming it violently down onto the steel corner of the server console.

The wrench slipped from Eleanor’s bruised fingers, clattering loudly against the deck.

Before Eleanor could scream, Clara seized her by the lapels of her soaked turquoise robe, spinning her around and slamming her back against the terminal screen. The computer monitor cracked with a sharp spiderweb fracture behind Eleanor’s head.

""Progress: 74%... CANCELLED,"" the automated voice flatlined.

Eleanor gasped for breath, staring into Clara’s unblinking eyes. Up close, beneath the glaring server lights, Clara’s bald scalp and jagged, raw scar looked ancient—like the battle marks of an empress who had survived a hundred executions.

""Please..."" Eleanor whimpered, all her venom finally suffocated by raw terror. ""Clara... please, I’m an old woman... Julian made me do it...""

""Julian is already in chains,"" Clara said, her voice a terrifying whisper against Eleanor's ear. ""And you will join him in a cell where you will never see a strand of silk again.""

Clara reached up, took hold of Eleanor’s heavy double-strand pearl necklace, and ripped it from her throat with a single violent jerk.

The silk cord snapped. Dozens of glowing white pearls scattered across the wet deck floor, bouncing away like tiny hail into the dark corners of the communications room.

Marcus Cole appeared in the doorway, his radio crackling. ""Harbor patrol is here, Clara. The perimeter is secure.""

Clara released Eleanor, who slid down against the console, sobbing hysterically as she clawed at the empty floor, trying to scoop up the scattered pearls with her bleeding fingernails.

Two harbor officers entered and dragged Eleanor to her feet, pulling her out into the pouring rain.

Clara walked out onto the forward deck of the Sea Sovereign.

To the east, the black storm clouds were finally beginning to split. A thin, brilliant ribbon of amber and gold light cut across the Atlantic horizon, signaling the break of dawn.

The rain softened to a mist. Clara stood at the ship’s railing, letting the cold salt spray wash over her face. She reached up and touched the jagged line of her forehead. The stitches were gone. The blood had washed away. Only the scar remained—a permanent, unbending line of victory carved into her flesh.

Her phone buzzed. It was Vance.

""Clara,"" his voice came through clear and strong. ""The board of directors is assembled at the corporate tower. The press has been notified of Julian’s arrest. They are waiting for the Chairman of Vance Shipping.""

Clara looked into the rising sun, her charcoal suit drying in the morning wind, her head held high and unbowed.

""Tell them I’m on my way,"" Clara said. ""And tell them the Vance legacy has never been stronger."""
