Chapter 5 - The Glass Room

Adam fell to his knees on the concrete floor of the locker, his fingers scattering the photographs across the dust.

They weren't just snapshots; they were methodical records of his daily life. Photos of Adam carrying Lucas on his shoulders through the park; photos of Adam reading to Lucas at his bedside; photos of Adam standing on the scaffolding at his downtown construction sites.

In every single photograph, taken with a high-powered telephoto lens, there was a red grease-pencil circle drawn around Adam's face, accompanied by timestamps and notes in a hand that did not belong to Clara.

""What is this?"" Adam gasped aloud, the sound bouncing off the corrugated tin walls of the storage unit. ""What did she do?""

He grabbed the thickest manila folder at the bottom of the trunk. The cover read: PROJECT LAZARUS - COGNITIVE RECONSTRUCTION VANCE, ADAM.

He ripped it open. The first document was not an adoption record. It was a coroner’s report from the Department of Transportation, dated November 14, seven years ago.

Victim: Adam Vance, Age 31.Status: Pronounced dead at scene. Massive cranial trauma, fatal hemorrhagic shock following vehicular collision on I-95.Next of Kin: Clara Vance (Wife).

Adam dropped the folder as if it had burned him. He grabbed his own chest, feeling the heavy, rhythmic thumping of his heart. He felt his throat, his jaw, the faint scar running along his hairline. He was breathing. He felt the cold iron of the floor beneath his palms. He was alive. He was standing here.

He lunged for the facedown photograph on the wooden stool.

He flipped it over.

It was a family portrait. Clara sat in a garden surrounded by wild roses, glowing with happiness. Beside her was a tall, handsome man with broad shoulders, dark hair, and a slight cleft in his chin.

The man in the photograph was not him.

The man in the photograph had a different jawline, a deeper shadow in his eyes, and a tattoo of a coiled viper around his wrist—a mark Adam had never seen before in his life. Resting on Clara's lap in the photo was a newborn baby.

Behind him, the storage facility’s basement door creaked open. Footsteps descended the iron stairs, slow, heavy, and deliberate.
