Chapter 8 - The Ghost on the Wire

The rain was coming down in sheets now, turning the streets into slick, black mirrors that reflected the city lights. Adam sprinted through the alleyway, breath ripping through his throat like sandpaper, his fingers slick with cold water and his own blood where a fragment of shattered brick had grazed his wrist.

He reached his SUV, threw the green project folder onto the passenger seat, and locked the doors. The engine roared to life.

He didn't drive toward Sarah’s house immediately. If Arthur had surveillance on him, Sarah’s home was already compromised. He pulled into the parking lot of a 24-hour convenience store three blocks away, keeping the engine idling while he frantically searched the contents of the Lazarus folder.

Beneath the autopsy records was a series of financial ledgers. Every payment had been routed through a shell company named Aegis Holdings, originating from an offshore account in Zurich.

And then he saw the name of the primary shareholder.

Julian Croft.

The name struck Adam like a physical blow. Julian Croft was not a ghost; he was a titan. Croft was a billionaire logistics and defense contractor who had vanished from public life six years ago following a massive corporate scandal and rumors of an international extradition warrant. The man in the garden photograph—the man with the coiled viper tattoo—was Croft.

Adam’s phone buzzed violently on the center console. The caller ID was blocked.

He stared at it for three rings, then tapped the speaker button. ""Who is this?""

""You broke Arthur’s jaw,"" a voice replied. It was deep, cultivated, and chillingly calm, carrying the smooth accent of old European wealth. ""A vulgar reaction, but I suppose within expected behavioral parameters for a man whose reality has collapsed.""

""Croft,"" Adam said, his voice hard as granite.

A brief chuckle sounded across the line. ""So, the memory blockers are degrading. Clara told me she began lowering the dosage during her chemotherapy. She wanted to believe you would fight for the boy. She was always an incorrigible romantic.""

""Lucas is my son,"" Adam snarled. ""I don't care what you paid for, what you cut into my brain, or what Clara signed. You come near him, and I will kill you.""

""Adam, look at your hands,"" Croft said quietly. ""Look at the way you hold a steering wheel. Look at the way you react to a weapon. Do you really believe you were an architect before the crash? You were an extraction specialist for private military contractors. You were dying in that hospital from a botched operation in Istanbul. Clara didn't just save herself; she saved you. But the transaction has concluded.""

Adam stared down at the semi-automatic pistol on his lap. His hands weren't shaking anymore. He had cleared the chamber, checked the slide, and held it with an instinctive, professional familiarity that terrified him.

""Where is he, Adam?"" Croft asked softly. ""Tell me, or I will dismantle everything your sister Sarah holds dear before sunrise.""
