Chapter 13 - Facing the GhostThe legal proceedings came to a formal conclusion in late spring. Julian Vance accepted a plea bargain that sentenced him to eighteen years in a federal penitentiary without the possibility of early parole. Before the final sentencing, Julian requested a five-minute meeting with Christian in the courthouse holding room.

Christian agreed, but he did not go alone.

When Julian was led into the small interview room, dressed in an orange jumpsuit, his hair prematurely silvered and his eyes hollowed by defeat, he found Christian sitting across the metal table. Standing beside Christian was Leo.

Julian stiffened, his lips trembling. "You... you brought him here? To mock me?"

"No, Julian," Christian replied calmly. "I brought him here so you could look into the eyes of the boy you tried to silence, and understand that you failed."

Julian looked at his nephew. For months, he had convinced himself that Leo was merely a pawn in a financial game, an abstraction on a trust document. But seeing the bright, lucid intelligence in the boy’s gaze shattered his remaining defenses.

"Leo..." Julian croaked, his voice cracking. "I... I loved your mother."

Leo looked at the man who had stolen five years of his childhood. There was no hatred in his young face, only a profound, innocent clarity.

"My mama loved words," Leo said softly. "She used to sing them to me before you made the room go quiet. But Dad found the words again. And Clara helped me hear them. I hope someone sings to you in that place, Uncle Julian. Because being in the dark is very lonely."

Julian slumped forward, burying his face in his cuffed hands, weeping with a bitter, inconsolable agony as the guards led Christian and Leo back toward the sunlight.
