Chapter 3 - Secrets Behind the Estate WallsThe return to the Ashford manor felt markedly different. The cavernous rooms, usually suffocated by an unnatural silence, were suddenly alive with micro-sounds: the creak of floorboards, the wind brushing against the rose bushes outside, the steady clinking of silverware as Clara prepared a simple meal in the kitchen.

Albert met Christian in the library, carrying a thick leather-bound dossier. The elderly butler had served three generations of the Ashford family, and his eyes carried the sorrow of a man who had seen too many secrets fester in luxury.

"You requested the domestic logs from the year of Mrs. Ashford’s passing, Master Christian," Albert said, placing the folder on the mahogany desk.

"Clara didn't know," Christian stated flatly, reviewing the young maid’s background. "She has only been with us for six months. Why would she be the one to dislodge it?"

"Because she treated him like a child, not an invalid, sir," Albert replied with quiet conviction. "For four years, the previous staff—hired specifically on Mr. Julian Vance’s recommendations—were strictly instructed never to touch Master Leo’s ears, citing extreme sensitivity and phantom nerve pain. They bathed him with special ear guards. When you fired that agency last spring, Julian protested vehemently."

Christian opened the dossier. Inside were transfer statements from the family trust. Every month, millions were diverted into Julian Vance’s philanthropic foundation—a foundation dedicated to the 'Custodial Care and Future Well-being of Disabled Ashford Heirs.' Under the terms of Sophia’s inheritance, if Leo was deemed incapacitated, full voting control of her forty percent stake in Ashford Global fell to Julian.

"If Leo can hear, if he can speak and testify to his own faculties, Julian’s trusteeship is voided instantly," Christian murmured, his jaw clenching so hard the muscle throbbed.

A small knock broke his trance. Clara stood at the doorway holding a glass of warm milk. "Mr. Ashford? Leo wants you. He says the rain on his bedroom window has a melody, and he wants to know what words go with it."

Christian looked from the corporate documents to the gentle young maid, realizing that while greed had built a cage around his son, a stranger’s humble tenderness had broken the lock.
