Chapter 12 - A Father’s Awakening

Later that evening, after dinner had ended and the boys were in Leo’s bedroom setting up a sprawling train track, a sudden commotion broke out.
A loud crash was followed by angry shouting and the sharp sound of crying.
David and Elena bolted up the stairs, with Clara following quickly behind.
In Leo’s room, a wooden bookshelf had been partially overturned. Books and model airplanes lay scattered across the carpet. Julian stood in the corner, his fists clenched, his face flushed red with furious tears. Leo was sitting on the floor, holding his arm, weeping.
"What happened?" Elena gasped, rushing to Leo’s side to check his arm and abdomen. "Leo, are you hurt? Did you hit your side?"
"He broke my airplane!" Julian yelled, his voice cracking with a child’s desperate rage. "The one my dad gave me before he died! He threw it on the floor!"
"I didn't mean to!" Leo sobbed, holding his bruised elbow. "It was an accident! I was trying to reach the track!"
"You ruin everything!" Julian screamed at Leo. "You took my mom’s kidney, you have a giant house, and now you break my dad’s stuff! I hate you!"
The words detonated in the room like a grenade.
Clara gasped. "Julian Robert Miller! That is entirely unacceptable. Apologize to your brother right now."
"No!" Julian shouted. He turned toward the door, his chest heaving, his eyes burning with an accumulation of six months of buried, confusing grief. "He isn't my brother! He has everything, and I don't even know who I am anymore!"
Before anyone could stop him, Julian bolted down the hallway, down the stairs, and out the back patio door into the cool evening air.
Clara made to follow him, but David stepped forward, gently touching her arm.
"Let me," David said softly.

Clara looked at him, seeing the quiet resolve in his face. She nodded. "Be careful, David. He misses his father. He’s carrying ghosts."
"I know," David replied. "I'll handle it."
