Chapter 6 - The Unspoken Truth

While the medical preparations for the transplant began moving at frantic speed, the psychological reality proved far more precarious.

Julian had to be told.

The meeting took place in the neutral setting of a family therapy center near the hospital. The room was furnished with soft couches, colorful rugs, and shelves of board games designed to make children feel at ease.

Julian sat on the carpet, building an elaborate tower out of wooden blocks. He was an energetic child, curious and inquisitive, constantly asking questions about how things worked. Across the room, David and Elena sat side-by-side, watching him with an ache that felt like an open wound.

Clara sat on the floor beside Julian. She laid a hand gently on his knee. "Julian, honey. Do you remember when we talked about how families are made?"

"Yeah," Julian said, carefully balancing a triangular block atop a column. "Some kids are adopted, and some kids have two moms, and some kids live with their grandparents."

"That’s right," Clara said, her voice steady despite the tension in the room. "Well, something very unusual happened when you were born. A mistake happened at the hospital where you and another little boy were born on the same night."

Julian paused, his hand hovering over the blocks. He turned his bright hazel eyes to Clara. "What kind of mistake?"

David leaned forward, unable to remain silent. He felt drawn across the room by an invisible tide. He knelt down beside Julian, keeping a respectful distance. "Julian, when you were just a tiny baby, the nurses put the wrong name tags on you and another boy named Leo. Elena and I took Leo home, and your mom took you home."

Julian looked at David, then at Elena, and finally back at Clara. His brow furrowed in deep concentration. "So... you're not my mom?" he asked Clara, his voice small and sudden.

Clara scooped him into her arms instantly, pulling him tight against her chest. "I am your mom, Julian. I will always be your mom. Nothing in the universe can ever change that. I raised you, I love you with all my heart, and I will be your mom until the end of time."

Julian buried his face in Clara’s shoulder, his fingers gripping her shirt. "Then why are they here?"

Elena’s heart broke into a thousand pieces. She moved closer, sitting on the floor beside them, careful not to crowd him. "We are here because we love you too, Julian. Even though we didn't know you until now, you are part of us. And your brother... the boy who lives with us... is very sick. Your mom is going to save his life."

Julian peeked out from Clara’s shoulder. He looked at Elena’s face, studying her features with an uncanny intensity. He looked at her eyes, then reached up to touch his own eye.

"You have eyes like mine," Julian murmured.

Elena let out a wet, half-laugh, half-cry. "Yes, I do. We share the very same eyes."
