Chapter 8 - The Threshold of Hope

The morning of the surgery arrived under a gray, overcast sky.

The surgical wing of St. Jude Memorial was bathed in harsh, fluorescent light. In the pre-operative staging area, two gurneys were parked side by side, separated only by a thin blue curtain that had been pulled back.

On one lay Clara, dressed in a surgical gown, her hair covered in a disposable cap. On the other lay Leo, hooked up to monitors, looking tiny and fragile amidst the tangle of plastic tubing.

Elena and David stood between the beds. On the other side of Clara’s gurney sat Julian, holding his mother’s hand tightly.

"Are you scared, Leo?" Julian asked across the narrow gap between the beds. It was the first time the two boys had spoken directly.

Leo looked over, his brow furrowing slightly. "A little bit. The needle in my hand pinched."

Julian reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, metallic object: a miniature die-cast model of a 1968 Shelby Mustang, his absolute favorite toy. He leaned over the rail and placed it on Leo’s blanket.

"Here," Julian said firmly. "You hold this. My dad gave it to me before he went to heaven. It makes you brave."

Clara watched her son with pride so intense it brought fresh tears to her eyes. She reached out and touched Leo’s small, pale hand. "Leo, I’m going to go to sleep first. And when I wake up, a part of me will be inside you, working hard to make sure you can run and jump again."

Leo looked at her, his hazel eyes wide and thoughtful. "Thank you, Clara."

The surgical team entered, led by Dr. Hayes and the chief transplant surgeon. "It's time," the surgeon said gently.

Elena kissed Leo’s forehead, whispering prayers into his hair, then walked around the bed to kiss Clara’s cheek. "Thank you," Elena breathed. "There are no words in any language. Thank you."

"Bring our boys through this," Clara whispered back, squeezing Elena’s hand.

The orderlies unlocked the wheels of the gurneys. As Clara was wheeled down the corridor toward Operating Room 4, Leo’s bed followed closely behind toward Operating Room 5.

David, Elena, and Julian stood together in the hallway, watching the heavy double doors swing shut behind them. Julian looked up and instinctively reached out. David felt a small, warm hand slip into his own.

David looked down at Julian—his biological son—and felt a tear slide down his cheek. He squeezed the small hand gently. "We're going to wait right here, Julian. All of us together."
