Chapter 14 - The River of Shadows

The darkness of the drainage tunnel was absolute, broken only by the narrow beam of Julian’s tactical flashlight. The roar of rushing water echoed deafeningly against the curved concrete pipes as they waded through knee-deep runoff, heading downward into the heart of the mountain.
Julian carried Maya on his back, her arms locked tightly around his neck, while his left arm remained wrapped around Elena’s waist, supporting her as she fought against the cold current. Every few hundred yards, a distant tremor shuddered through the earth above them—the sound of demolition charges collapsing the underground laboratory.
“He held them,” Elena whispered, her teeth chattering from the freezing mountain water. “Marcus held the door.”
“He bought us our lives,” Julian said, his jaw set hard. “I won’t let his sacrifice be in vain. Once we clear this tunnel, the Sterling assets are going into a blind trust for his children.”
Ahead of them, the heavy smell of stagnant water began to give way to the scent of pine needles and damp earth. A circle of dim grey light appeared at the end of the long pipe. The exit.
They stumbled out from the concrete culvert into the rain-soaked forest basin. The mountain air was freezing, but to Julian, it tasted like absolute freedom. High above the tree canopy, Blackwood Ridge was engulfed in a towering column of black smoke and orange flames, secondary explosions lighting up the night sky.
Suddenly, the beam of a high-powered searchlight swept across the brush, pinning them in blinding white light.
Julian instantly pushed Elena and Maya behind a thick oak tree, drawing his weapon. “Stay down!”
“Hold your fire, Julian!” a voice boomed through an acoustic megaphone from the clearing ahead.
Julian squinted through the glare. Three armored vehicles bearing the seal of the United States Marshal Service were parked along the logging road, surrounded by heavily armed federal agents with rifles raised—not toward Julian, but toward the perimeter.

Stepping out from behind the lead vehicle was Madame Claire Vance, her coat collar turned up against the rain, flanked by a squad of federal marshals.
“I told you I’d mobilize them,” Claire called out with a fierce, triumphant smile. “Come out, Julian. The warrants have already been executed across the entire board.”
