Chapter 3 - The Vault in the Mist

The heavy sedan sped along the coastal highway, leaving the sprawling Sterling estate far behind. In the backseat, Maya had finally surrendered to exhaustion, her head resting against Julian’s thigh as she slept clutching her empty floral bag. Julian kept one hand resting protectively over her small shoulder, while his other hand turned the coin-sized drive over and over.

“She knew she had less than a month,” Claire began, staring out at the grey, churning waves below the cliff road. “Elena discovered Victoria had been rerouting the Sterling shipping manifests through offshore accounts in Cyprus. It wasn’t just money laundering, Julian. It was biological cargo—experimental pharmaceuticals manufactured under your family name.”

Julian felt a bitter taste coat his mouth. “I built that logistics division from scratch. Victoria was only an advisory consultant until two years ago.”

“She made herself indispensable by engineering the crisis that made you lean on her,” Claire replied, handing him a thin tablet. “Plug the drive into this. It has Elena’s voice log from the night she disappeared from the villa.”

With unsteady fingers, Julian inserted the small disk into the tablet. A brief static burst through the car’s speakers, followed by a quiet, strained voice that pierced straight through Julian’s ribcage. It was unmistakably Elena, though her breathing was shallow, interrupted by faint monitor beeps.

“Julian… if you’re hearing this, Victoria has already replaced me in our home,” the recording murmured. “I don't have time to explain how she altered the toxicology screens. Just know that the wedding you’re planning is not a marriage—it’s an asset transfer. The day you sign the registry, the power of attorney passes to her trust. Maya is the only legal blockade. Protect our girl. She carries the code on her skin.”

Julian paused the audio. His breath hitched. “On her skin?”

Claire looked over at the sleeping child, her face dark with sorrow. “Look under the hem of her dress, Julian. Behind her left shoulder.”

Gently, Julian pulled down the lace fabric of Maya’s dress. There, just beneath the nape of her neck, inked with micro-pigment into the child’s skin, was a sequence of twelve alphanumeric characters.

Suddenly, the sedan lurched violently as a heavy black SUV rammed their rear bumper from behind, sending the car sliding sideways toward the cliff edge.
