Chapter 1 - The Broken Lock

Mark’s boots hit the flooded grass with a violent splash. His vehicle’s headlights cut through the torrential downpour, casting long, sinister shadows of the iron animal cage across the lawn. His heart slammed against his ribs like a caged beast itself. For weeks, he had brushed aside the strange marks on his children’s arms, the hushed whispers, and the unnerving way Clara shrank back whenever Amanda entered the room. He had believed Amanda’s smooth explanations, trusting her facade of maternal patience. Now, the grotesque reality stripped away every illusion.
Amanda stood beside the kennel, her hooded trench coat glistening black under the storm. The coiled hemp rope hung limply in her left hand. Her face, caught in the blinding glare of the headlamps, froze in surprise before smoothing into an icy, contemptuous mask. She didn't drop the rope. She didn't offer an excuse. She merely stared at him as if he were an uninvited intruder in her private kingdom of cruelty.
Inside the rusted bars, seven-year-old Clara was curled into a protective ball. Her soaked beige shirt clung to her frail frame, her body shivering violently against the relentless chill of the night. Wrapped beneath her trembling arms was two-year-old Leo. The boy’s face was pressed deep into his sister’s chest, his tiny sobs muffled against her damp skin. Clara’s hazel eyes, swollen and haunted, widened with a desperate glimmer of hope when she saw Mark.
"What are you doing to my children?!" Mark roared, his voice cracking with a mixture of raw fury and sickening disbelief. He surged forward, closing the distance between them in seconds. He grabbed Amanda by the shoulder, shoving her away from the enclosure with enough force to send her stumbling backward onto the slick grass.
Amanda regained her balance with unnatural poise, her sneer deepening. "They needed discipline, Mark. You spoil them. The boy wouldn't stop screaming, and the girl has a foul, deceitful tongue. I was teaching them obedience."

Mark didn't waste his breath arguing with a monster. He dropped to his knees in the mud, his hands frantically reaching for the cage door. A heavy brass padlock secured the latch. Clara reached through the cold bars, her small, freezing fingers wrapping around his wrist. Her voice was barely a rasp over the drumming rain. "Daddy... she took the key. She told Leo she was going to throw him in the river if he cried again."
Mark looked down at his daughter’s bruised wrists—faint, greenish rings left by earlier bindings. Pure venom rushed through his veins. He spun around toward Amanda, his fists clenched, but before he could demand the key, he heard the click of a metal chamber being cocked from the dark shadow beneath the porch.
