Chapter 12 - The Reckoning in the Mud

The sickening crunch of bone echoed from the depths of the limestone pit, followed by Julian's guttural scream of agony. His already damaged knee had taken the full brunt of the fall against solid rock. He lay twisted at the bottom, helpless, cursing violently as water seeped into the ditch.

Amanda stopped dead at the edge of the pit, the flashlight trembling in her grip as she stared down at her incapacitated brother. "Julian! Get up! Throw me the gun!"

"I can't! It's broken, my leg is shattered!" Julian wailed from the darkness.

Before Amanda could react, Mark emerged from behind the redwood like a phantom of mud and blood. He tackled her from behind, knocking the flashlight from her hand. They tumbled together into the wet mud. Amanda shrieked, scratching wildly at his face with manicured nails, trying to reach for the small paring knife she still carried in her pocket.

"You're a monster, Mark! You ruined everything!" she snarled, her blade nicking his cheek as she fought with feral frenzy.

Mark caught her wrist, twisting it sharply until the knife dropped into the mud. He pressed her down against the forest floor, pinning her shoulders with his knees despite the agonizing fire in his broken ribs.

"You put my children in a cage," Mark said, his voice deadly quiet, shaking not with fear, but with absolute, cold certainty. "You starved them. You threatened to drown a two-year-old child."

"They're not my blood!" Amanda spat, mud covering her cheek as she glared at him with pure hatred. "They were dead weight! You cared more about them than about me! You gave them everything!"

"They are innocent children," Mark said coldly. He pulled the coiled hemp rope—the very rope Amanda had carried on the lawn to torment Clara—from his belt. He had snatched it from the yard before fleeing the house. With swift, practiced mechanic's knots, he bound Amanda’s wrists tightly behind her back, securing her arms against a heavy pine stump.

"Let me go!" she screamed, thrashing against the wet bark. "The police will kill you! They know you took them!"

Mark stood up, wiping the rain and blood from his eyes. He picked up Amanda’s fallen purse from the mud and unzipped it. Inside, alongside her makeup and wallet, sat a small digital audio recorder—a device she had used to practice her tearful 911 calls, containing saved voice memos of her plotting with Julian about the insurance payout and how to stage Mark's accident.

Mark looked down at her, holding the recorder in the air. "The police are going to hear everything, Amanda. From your own mouth."
