Chapter 9 - The Web of Lies

Mark froze, staring at the dust-covered radio console in the corner. The red indicator light blinked erratically as Amanda's smooth, fabricated voice echoed through the small cabin.
"...he attacked me and my brother at our home," Amanda continued, her voice trembling with perfectly rehearsed tears. "He has taken my stepchildren, Clara and Leo. He is armed and extremely dangerous. Last seen heading north toward the Blackwood wilderness. Please... send emergency units immediately. I fear for my children's lives."
A dispatcher’s calm, authoritative voice responded over the frequency: "Copy that, Mrs. Vance. County deputies and state troopers are mobilizing a perimeter along Route 9 and the forestry service roads. We have your brother Julian receiving medical attention at the junction. Remain with the units on scene."
Mark stood up, his jaw set in cold anger. She was thorough. She hadn't just hunted them physically; she had already laid the legal snare. If the police found them first, Mark would be viewed as an armed abductor who had assaulted his wife and brother-in-law. Any sudden movement in the dark woods could end with him being shot on sight by panicked deputies.
Clara looked up from the bunk, holding Leo close to the glowing stove. The toddler’s color was returning, his breathing deeper and more even under the heavy wool blankets. "Daddy... the lady on the radio is lying. Why would they believe her?"
"Because she got to them first," Mark said quietly, walking over to the radio. He picked up the microphone, intending to transmit their coordinates, but stopped himself. The transmission would broadcast on an open channel. Amanda and Julian were right there with the responding units. If they heard him declare his position, they could redirect the search—or Julian could slip away to finish the job before the police arrived.
Instead, Mark searched the desk drawers. Beneath logbooks from three years ago, he found a hand-crank emergency satellite beacon, a first aid kit, and an old tactical map of the county water authority.

He opened the map, tracing the river they had just escaped. Three miles east of their position was the old municipal dam. The dam’s maintenance tunnels crossed under Route 9 directly into the adjacent county—outside the jurisdiction of the corrupt or manipulated local township police.
Suddenly, outside the cabin, the drone of a low-flying helicopter cut through the storm clouds above. A searchlight swept through the pine trees, turning the dense forest into a stark landscape of blinding white and pitch-black shadows. The beam swept across the front porch.
