Chapter 1 - The Shattered Façade

The marble corridor felt unusually cold beneath Margaret’s heels as she carried five-year-old Lily away from the bridal suite. The heavy oak door slammed shut behind them, cutting off the panicked gasps of Vanessa, who stood petrified in her pristine, diamond-encrusted gown. Lily was trembling in Margaret’s arms, her small chest heaving with silent, hiccuping sobs. Mud and grim grime covered the front of the delicate tulle flower girl dress—a dress Margaret had personally commissioned in Milan. Across Lily’s tender cheek, a faint red welt mirrored the vicious strike Vanessa had delivered in secret only minutes earlier.

"She thought no one saw," Margaret murmured under her breath, her jaw aching from the clenching of her teeth. "She thought fear would keep a child silent."
Ethan stood halfway down the grand hall, waiting motionless beneath the arched garlands of white roses. His black tuxedo was immaculate, yet his posture carried none of the nervous anticipation typical of an eager groom. His fingers lightly rested on a sleek, miniature wireless earbud tucked into his ear canal. When Margaret approached, her emerald evening gown sweeping against the polished stone, Ethan’s eyes did not dart around in confusion. They were steel, cold and utterly composed.

"Ethan, stop this madness right now," Margaret said, her voice dropping into a fierce whisper so the passing caterers would not overhear. "She hit Lily. She dragged your daughter into the mud by the garden pavilion simply because Lily walked too close to the tail of her veil. Then she shoved her into the dressing closet like garbage."

"I heard everything, Mother," Ethan replied quietly, his lips barely parting. He pressed his finger once more against the earpiece. "I’ve had the suite wired since six this morning."

Margaret blinked, stunned by his eerie calmness. "If you know who she truly is, why are the doors to the sanctuary still open? Why are four hundred guests sitting out there expecting you to exchange vows?"

Ethan stepped forward, bending slightly to smooth Lily’s messy brown hair away from her tear-streaked eyes. His expression softened for a fraction of a second before hardening into granite. "Because Vanessa didn't just come here to marry me, Mother. She came to clean out our family’s offshore holdings before the market opens tomorrow. If we throw her out now, she flees the country with seven million dollars in untraceable bearer bonds."

Lily pulled herself closer to Margaret’s collarbone, pointing a tiny finger toward the far end of the corridor where the security arches stood. "Grandma... look."

Through the frosted double doors at the end of the promenade walked a man in an expensive tailored gray suit, escorted on either side by armed private guards. Margaret gasped, recognizing the sharp, predatory smirk instantly. It was Julian Vance—Ethan’s former chief financial officer, who had supposedly vanished after embezzling five million dollars two years prior. And he was holding an identical set of vault access keys.
