Chapter 14 - The Edge of the Abyss

The rain returned with biblical fury as Ethan tracked the medical van to an abandoned private aviation hangar on the coast of Rhode Island. The coastal winds howled against the rusted corrugated steel walls of the structure, whipping seawater across the runway.

Inside the cavernous hangar sat an unmarked twin-engine turboprop plane, its propellers already spinning, slicing through the mist with a deafening roar.

Ethan kicked open the side service door of the hangar, entering alone with his weapon drawn. He knew that any overt assault would result in Clara’s immediate execution.

In the center of the hangar, tied to an industrial wheelchair, was Clara. Her face was pale, an IV drip taped to her forearm, leading to a portable medical centrifuge. Standing beside her, holding a surgical scalpel, was Vanessa. She had discarded her hospital gown for dark clothes, her shoulder heavily bandaged, her eyes wild with feverish desperation.

"Don't take another step, Ethan!" Vanessa screamed over the roar of the airplane engines. "One slip of this blade, and your dear sister bleeds out before you can cross the floor!"

Ethan lowered his gun slightly, taking measured steps forward. "Let her go, Vanessa. You’re dying. Look at your hands—the tremors have already started. You won't survive the flight to South America."

"I have enough time to extract the stem cell cultures!" Vanessa laughed hysterically, her voice shrill and unhinged. "With her blood and your father's Swiss laboratory, I will be cured! I will live like a queen while you rot in the ruins of your precious family empire!"

Clara opened her eyes weakly, looking at Ethan through blurred vision. "Ethan... she killed my father... she poisoned Richard's medication five years ago..."

Ethan’s jaw tightened, the final puzzle piece locking into place with terrifying precision. "You poisoned him, didn't you? Richard didn't die of natural heart failure. You began administering small doses the day he drew up the new trust."

"He was an old fool who deserved to die!" Vanessa yelled, pressing the blade against Clara’s throat. "He was going to give everything to this pathetic little nurse! Everything I worked for! Everything I bled for!"

From outside the hangar, the sound of approaching sirens wailed through the storm. Vanessa panicked, her eyes darting toward the open runway doors.

In that split second of distraction, Ethan raised his firearm and pulled the trigger.
