Chapter 4 - The Puppet Master's Hand

The silence inside the dressing room became deafening, punctuated only by the distant, joyful strains of the wedding choir warming up in the main sanctuary. Ethan’s gaze never wavered from Marcus, though the tension in his shoulders coiled tighter.

"Is that true, Marcus?" Ethan asked, his voice chillingly calm.

Marcus looked trapped, his eyes darting frantically between Ethan and the door. "Ethan, she’s twisting the facts! Vance had leverage on me. My father’s medical debts—the gambling lines in Macau—I had no choice! Vance swore he was just leaving the country and would never return. I had no idea he was planning to infiltrate your life with her!"

"You sold my family out for your debts," Ethan said, each syllable heavy with absolute betrayal. "You introduced her to me at the gala in London. You orchestrated the entire coincidence."

"I thought she genuinely fell for you!" Marcus cried, tears welling in his eyes. "I tried to call it off last month, but Julian threatened to send the transaction records to the FBI. I came in here today to force her to leave, to make her call off the ceremony!"

"Too late for regret, brother," Vanessa sneered, reaching calmly behind the vanity mirror and retrieving a slim velvet pouch. "The contracts are already registered with the county clerk. Ethan signed the pre-marital wealth distribution document yesterday morning."

"That document required my signature under full disclosure of assets," Ethan stated, taking a step forward. "A fraudulent identity invalidates every clause."

"Not when the signature on that certificate belongs to the real Vanessa Sterling," Vanessa replied with chilling smugness. "You never bothered to check the grave in Boston, did you, Ethan? The real Vanessa Sterling died twelve years ago in a house fire. I didn't steal her identity; her father gave it to me before he died. I am the legal sole heir to the Sterling trust."

Before Ethan could react, the door behind him swung open. Margaret stood in the threshold, her face as pale as chalk, holding an open leather ledger. "Ethan... look at the date on this transfer."

Ethan glanced down at the paper his mother held. The wire transfer of seventy million dollars hadn't gone out this morning. It had been executed three hours ago—and the authorization code was Lily’s birth date, an encrypted code only Ethan’s late father had ever known.
