Chapter 2 - The Silent Ambush

Margaret grabbed Ethan’s arm, her knuckles whitening against the dark wool of his sleeve. "Julian Vance is dead, Ethan. The authorities found his rental car burnt to ash in the Swiss Alps twenty-four months ago. How is he walking through our front entrance?"

"A burned corpse with dental records swapped at a private morgue," Ethan said, never taking his eyes off the approaching man. "Vanessa didn't just work alone. Julian didn't steal that money for himself; he stole it to bankroll her identity. Her real name isn’t Vanessa Sterling. It’s Elena Ruiz. She’s Vance’s half-sister."

Lily whimpered, hiding her face in Margaret’s neck. "That man was in mommy's room yesterday, Daddy. He told her not to forget the small black box in the drawer."

Ethan knelt down so he was level with his daughter. "Lily, sweetheart, I need you to go with Aunt Clara to the private residence upstairs. Do not open the doors for anyone except me or Grandma. Understand?"

The little girl nodded slowly, wiping her wet nose with the ruined sleeve of her gown. Margaret motioned for Clara, Ethan’s trusted personal assistant, who materialized from behind the heavy velvet curtains and gently scooped Lily into her arms, disappearing down the service elevator.

Julian Vance paused twenty feet away. He didn't look like a man on the run; he carried the swagger of someone who believed every variable had been accounted for. "Ethan," Julian said, offering a mocking nod. "You look remarkably composed for a man whose wedding is twenty minutes away."

"You shouldn't have set foot back on American soil, Julian," Ethan replied, his voice deadpan, completely devoid of rage.

"And miss seeing my sister secure fifty percent of the Sterling estate?" Julian chuckled, slipping his hands into his pockets. "Your father’s trust has a very clear clause, Ethan. If you die unmarried before age thirty-five, the board takes control. But if you marry and become incapacitated within forty-eight hours, full conservatorship passes directly to your legal spouse."

Margaret gasped, clutching her chest. "Incapacitated? What have you done?"

"Ask your bartender, Margaret," Julian sneered, turning his gaze toward the altar where the organist was already beginning the prelude. "The toast is already poured. A rare neurotoxin, completely undetectable by standard toxicology screens. You have about ten minutes before Ethan takes his customary glass of vintage Scotch with the best man."

Julian turned on his heel to head toward the main gallery, but before Ethan could signal his security detail to move in, a muffled gunshot echoed from the bridal suite behind them.
