Chapter 1 - The Broken Lock

Dominic Vance knelt on the cold marble of his penthouse threshold. The tailored silk of his suit trousers grazed the floor, an instinctual concession he had never made for any living creature. His empire had been built on fear, ruthless precision, and utter detachment. Yet here stood a barefoot toddler clutching a battered stuffed rabbit, her tear-stained face tilted up toward him.

""Where is your mommy?"" Dominic asked, his deep voice softened beneath deliberate restraint.

The little girl sniffled, clutching the toy tighter. Her tiny fingers pointed past his doorway toward the private elevator lobby. The maintenance door at the far end of the hall—a passage rarely accessed by anyone other than service staff—hung ajar by a mere inch.

Rising swiftly, Dominic scooped the child onto his hip with one arm. She was impossibly light, trembling against his chest. He moved soundlessly across the corridor, his right hand slipping under his coat toward the concealed firearm beneath his armpit. He nudged the heavy steel door open with his toe.

The emergency stairwell was dimly lit by a flickering fluorescent fixture. On the landing halfway down the first flight lay the motionless body of a woman. Dark auburn hair obscured her features, spilled over a tattered coat that looked entirely foreign to this luxury high-rise. Blood pooled beneath her temple, dark against the concrete steps.

Dominic carefully set the child behind him against the wall. ""Stay right here. Don't look down.""

He took two long strides down the stairs, checking the woman's carotid pulse. It was faint, shallow, and erratic. As he brushed her matted hair away from her face to clear her airway, the breath caught in his throat.

The woman lying in the pool of blood was Elena Rostova—the only woman he had ever loved, who had vanished from his life without a trace five years ago.

Before he could process the shock, the heavy fire door below creaked open. Heavy, deliberate footsteps began ascending the concrete stairs.
